Finger Print.
Monday, September 22, 2008 at 10:48AM I recently stumbled upon a book on Amazon that I'd recommend to any graphic designer... "Fingerprint. The Art of Using Handmade Elements in Graphic Design", by Chen Design Associates out of San Francisco. Don't let the title fool you. It's a refreshing view on going back to using our hands to actually create, then facilitating the power of the computer as a finishing tool, not a design tool. Michael Mabry talks about his frustration over technology in the Foreword...
"...The intense focus on technology started to cloud my creative judgement. I found myself finding ways to work with the computer's capabilities rather than with my own. For example, I would rely on the path of least resistance if I had a tight deadline. I would create images as vector files because it was easier for the computer to manage versus getting bogged down with high resolution files. This approach did not sit well with me and I became creatively restless. After working thirteen years in the business, I needed to step away and evaluate what I was doing..."

These are some of my heros who embrace the time it takes to explore and experiment with handmade elements , then turn them into powerful marketing messages.
